What is XRechnung?
XRechnung is Germany’s standard for electronic invoices, based on the European standard EN 16931. It is a pure XML file without a visual layout. Invoices to German federal authorities must be sent as XRechnung, and since 2025 German businesses must be able to receive e-invoices – so more and more companies, including foreign suppliers and customers, receive XRechnung files.
An XRechnung can use one of two syntaxes, UBL or CII. The viewer detects both automatically and shows the version, for example “XRechnung 3.0 (UBL)”.
